초대 수상 Balewa의 아들, Jonathan에 맞서 후보로 나오다.​

나이지리아의 초대 수상이자 유일한 수상이었던 Alhaji Abubakar Tafawa-Balewa의 아들 Abdul Jhalil Tafawa Balewa 박사가

인민 민주당(Peoples Democratic Party, PDP)에서 현직 대통령 Goodluck Jonathan과 함께 대선에 출마한다고 공식 발표했다.

 

현 대통령을 단일한 후보로 내세우자는 당내 주요 세력들의 결정에 따라

모든 당원들에게 다른 대선 후보를 지지하는 행위를 자제하라는 명령이 내려졌음에도 불구하고, 어제 이러한 결정이 내려졌다.

PDP 또한 어제 당의 입장을 발표했다.

​이들은 2015년 대선에서 현 부통령인 Namadi Sambo의 대선행 티켓은 오직 대통령의 재가에 결정된다고 밝히며

해당사항에 대한 의구심을 일축했다.

​

한편, 인민 민주당은 연방 정부의 주요 프로젝트로 전국 투어를 계획하고 있다.

​이러한 투어를 추진하는 이유는 인민 민주당에 반대하는 타 정당들이

정부의 설립에 대해 많은 이들로부터 신임을 얻고 있기 때문이라고 인민 민주당은 어제 발표했다.

​또한, 이 투어는 정부의 행정적 성과들을 보여줌과 동시에,

Jonathan 박사가 지난주에 있었던 차기 대선 후보 선정회에서 만장일치로 승리를 거둔 것에 대해 제기되었던

비판을 묵살시키기 위한 것으로 해석된다.

Abdul Jhalil는 핵화학 박사학위를 소지하고 있으며,

​불과 일 년 전까지만 해도 2015 대통령 선거에 출마 의사를 드러낸 Jonathan 박사의 전폭적인 지지자였다.

​

​그의 도전은 인민 민주당을 절대적 지배 세력으로 변화시키겠다는 Jonathan 박사의 주장으로부터 영향을 받은 것이었다.

​그는 나이지리아 사람들의 생활환경이 좋지 못하다고 말하기까지 한 Jonathan 박사가 스스로 재선에 성공하기 위해

당의 중심 세력들에게 자신을 대선 후보로 세우는 결정을 통과시켜달라는 요구를 했다는 사실을 매우 못마땅하게 여겼다.

 

Abdul Jhalil는 지난 주말에 소셜 미디어 서비스를 통해 자신의 야망과 포부를 확정적으로 드러냈고,

​어제 이루어진 Vanguard와의 전화 인터뷰에서는 그의 가능성을 확인받았다.

​

어제 발표된 성명을 접한 이후, 인민 민주당의 국가 홍보 사무관인 Olisa Metuh는 “그가 인민 민주당 소속인가요?”라고 물었다.

하지만 그가 과거 Jonathan의 대권을 위한 선거운동에 참여했다는 말을 들은 이후,

Olisa는 “내가 여태까지 잘 몰랐던 것 같습니다.”라 발언했다.

Nigeria: 2015 - Balewa's Son Steps Out to Challenge Jonathan

A son of Nigeria's first and only prime minister, Alhaji Abubakar Tafawa-Balewa, Dr. Abdul Jhalil Tafawa Balewa, has formally thrown his hat into the ring to contest the presidential ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP with President Goodluck Jonathan.

The development came despite a warning by the party yesterday to all party members to refrain from seeking the presidency following the decision of the major organs of the party to adopt the incumbent(재임중인)president as sole candidate of the party.

The PDP, also yesterday, played down doubts on the position of the incumbent vice-president, Architect Namadi Sambo on the 2015 presidential ticket as it said that only the president could determine Sambo's fate.

Meanwhile, the PDP has scheduled a nationwide tour of flagship projects of the federal administration as it said yesterday that opposition parties were taking credit for the achievements of the administration.

The tour, it was learnt was aimed at showcasing the achievements of the administration and rebuffing critics of last week's unanimous adoption of Dr. Jonathan for a second term.

Abdul Jhalil, who holds a doctorate in nuclear chemistry and was a rabid supporter of Dr. Jonathan's alleged 2015 ambition only a year ago, based his challenge on what he described as the transformation of the PDP into a fiefdom. He particularly frowned at what he claimed as the determination of the leadership of the party to railroad the president for a second term despite what he described as the difficult living conditions of Nigerians.

The aspirant confirmed his ambition in a telephone interview with Vanguard yesterday following speculations about his ambition on social media and sms platforms at the weekend.

Taken up on the development yesterday, National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Chief Olisa Metuh, asked, "Is he in PDP?" Told that he had in the past campaigned for Dr. Jonathan, he said "I didn't know."
